Clapham One

Clapham One is a project procured by the local government and built in partnership with a private developer. The scheme includes two sites, the first site is home to a new leisure centre along with affordable housing, on the second site a new mixed use building contains a public library, large doctors surgery and 136 apartments.

The apartments are directly related to the mass of the building. A series of curved forms create an aggregation of elements that soften the mass of the building externally and create amazing curved living spaces internally. Each curved section houses a vertical stack of homes between which is a strip of windows that brings natural light into the communal spaces. On the 7th and 8th floor are two south facing communal terraces for use by the residents, landscaped to provide high quality amenity space including specially design tree pits and street furniture.

The building is has an efficient floor plate due to the composition of the plan, which uses a single main core to reach 114 apartments, with a separate 22 homes accessed from a separate entrance. The mass is clad in a white split face masonry block that sits next to a mirror polished stainless steel lining to the window reveals. This mix of rough next to smooth, of matt next to mirrored, gives a strong identity to the building while the use of tertiary colours ensures that the building will gently age over time.

This is a dense urban scheme on a tight urban site that has been recognised for its design excellence with 5 awards to date.
